CHERRYAID: Maria Elia of JOE’S serves textures of CHERRIES
Saturday 16th July has been designated National Cherry Day – a day to eat, cook and celebrate one of the few fruits to remain properly seasonal.
In the last 50 years we’ve lost 90% of our cherry orchards and now import around 95% of the cherries we eat. FoodLoversBritain.com has come to the rescue with CherryAid to help them out of a jam. This year CherryAid is encouraging people to support ‘The Great British Cherry’. Chef and author Maria Elia is supporting CherryAid with a cherry-rich menu at the newly launched JOE’S restaurant inSouth Kensington.
To celebrate the Great British Cherry, Maria Elia of JOE’S, will be showcasing cherry dishes from 18th to 23rd July. Highlights include a Cherry Bruschetta with Goat’s curd and Almonds, Slow Braised Veal in Cherry Liquor, Ham slow baked in Cherry Cola with a Puy Lentil and Cherry Salad, and an experimental Textures of Cherries dessert. Maria’s ‘cherry bomb’ – Textures of Cherries – will be made up of a flower pot lined with Kirsch-soaked chocolate cake, topped with cherry ice cream, filled with a chocolate mousse, topped with fresh cherries and a sprinkling of chocolate dirt. All the dishes are available a la carte or as a 2/3 course set menu including coffee served with Greg’s Sour Cherry and Pistachio Nougat.
JOE’S Great British Cherry Set Menu: Lunch & Dinner including coffee and nougat- 2 courses £21.75, 3 courses £25.75
Future flavour explorations include: TEA (August), FIGS (September), CHOCOLATE (October)

Rent a Cherry Tree
A rent-a-tree service based at a Northiam orchard is helping to stem the decline of a favourite British fruit. In return for a £41.50 annual fee, farmer Michael Dallaway does all the work whilst the renter gets to picnic in the orchard at blossom time and to pick the harvest in July, as well as receiving regular e-mails on the progress of the tree and prospects for its crop. The waiting list for 2012 crop opens at the beginning of the summer.
Visitors can pop in to sample some delectable cherry treats – cakes, pancakes and smoothies amongst others – served from the bbq and the Drawing Room Café. Eagle eyed cherry-fans that can spot the morello cherry tree in the gardens will receive a cherry prize.
