Agritainment: An Evening with Joel Salatin

We’re told that Joel Salatin wows packed audiences of all walks of life wherever he goes with his version of what he calls ‘Agritainment’ and later this month thanks to Petersham Nurseries we’ll find out exactly what this means. Petersham Platform is hosting an evening (in collaboration with the Sustainable Food Trust) with one of the organic farming world’s most colourful personalities Joel Salatin – American pioneer farmer, author and founder of Polyface Inc.

Christened ‘The World’s Most Innovative Farmer’ by Time magazine, Joel Salatin was honoured as a Heinz Award recipient for creating alternative, environmentally-friendly farming techniques, spawning a movement towards local, sustainable agriculture that has been replicated by family farms around the country. Additionally, Salatin and his Polyface Inc. have been featured in the book “Omnivore’s Dilemma” and the documentaries “Food Inc”, “Fresh” and “Farmageddon”. For Polyface Inc. is not just a simple farm. It’s a family owned, multi-generational, pasture-based, local-market farm and informational outreach. It’s an organic farm and much, much more. It is “beyond organic”. As Joel describes it, what they practice is “mob-stocking herbivorous solar conversion lignified carbon sequestration fertilization.”…!

In his Polyface Farm in Swoope, Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley, Joel works alongside his wife Teresa, son Daniel, daughter Rachel and daughter-in-law Sheri.

Jo Robinson, the author of Pasture Perfect: The Far-Reaching Benefits of Choosing Meat, Eggs and Dairy Products From Grass-Fed Animals (2004) said of Salatin:

“He’s not going back to the old model. There’s nothing in county extension or old-fashioned science that really informs him. He is just looking totally afresh at how to maximize production in an integrated system on a holistic farm. He’s just totally innovative”.

A man who truly walks his talk is a must-see wherever he goes with his capacity to communicate the means by which consumers can engage with farmers and how farmers can take control of not just production but also processing, distribution and marketing.

The event will include a talk from Joel, followed by a Q&A session with Joel and SFT director, Patrick Holden.
