The National Restaurant Awards

nralogosmallerOn Monday evening Spoon attended The National Restaurant Awards, an annual event hosted by Restaurant Magazine which names the best restaurants in the UK, in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland according to its 150 voters. It also reveals the country’s 100 best establishments as well rewarding the best wine list, sustainable restaurant, one to watch and the ever popular Chefs’ Chef of the Year. For the past three years, Brett Graham and his Notting Hill restaurant The Ledbury had held the number one position. 2013 however, saw a change at the top…

Results were announced over a three course dinner at The Brewery, in London. The evening began with a champagne reception which saw restaurant royalty Raymond Blanc and Joan Roca of El Celler de Can Roca (the current number one on The World’s 50 Best Restaurant list), enjoy drinks with the chefs behind other notable restaurants both in the UK and abroad. Daniel Patterson of Coi, Bruno Loubet (Grain Store), Mikeal Jonsson (Hedone), Stephen Harris (The Sportsman), Jason Atherton (Pollen Street Social and others), Tom Kitchin (Kitchin, Scran & Scallie) and Stephen Terry (The Hardwick) joined over 400 industry guests from across the country, as broadcaster Nigel Barden and Restaurant Magazine’s editor, William Drew began announcing who’d made the list.

The end of the night saw Tom and Beth Kerridge’s pub The Hand and Flowers crowned the number 1 with The Ledbury moving to second place. Tom and Beth opened The Hand & Flowers in Marlow in 2005. Only a year later, it was awarded its first Michelin star before making history in 2011 when it became the first pub to win two stars. Now they can add three more accolades to their ever growing list- The UK’s National Restaurant of the Year, England’s Best Restaurant 2013 and the UK’s Best Gastropub.

Other winners on the night included;

Highest New Entry – The Clove Club, Shoreditch, London

Chefs’ Chef of the Year – Stephen Harris, The Sportsman

Best Restaurant in Scotland- The Kitchin, Leith, Edinburgh

Best Restaurant in Wales – The Hardwick, Abergavenny
